Opened in May 1988, the first stage of the resort was a collection of Broome-style bungalows, a reception area, dining area and a small functions area. From these humble beginnings the Club has grown to a truly outstanding Resort, and an integral part of the Broome experience.
Experience is definitely the best way to describe the effect Broome has. The past 150 years have been colourful to say the least and the mix of cultures represented makes it an intriguing place to visit. Broome is home to Japanese pearl-divers, Chinese merchants, Aborigines, erudite drifters and cattle station owners, all of whom lend something to the atmosphere of the town. The Resort was designed to blend in sympathy with Broome's multicultural environment. Lord McAlpine would travel the world then return with vast collections of artwork, artefacts and furniture from Dutch colonial, Asian and Middle Eastern origins. Rather than being a haphazard assortment of miscellaneous pieces, the collection is a testament to Lord McAlpines impeccable taste. Even today, these worldly possessions decorate the rooms, restaurants and gardens of the Resort, and many of these pieces boast their own history and cultural significance. There is a wonderful incongruity between the ruggedness of the Kimberley and the colonial opulence of the Resort. It's a compelling mixture of the Orient and the Australian Outback. |
